• “Bride and Prejudice” (2004) – Also starring Aishwarya Rai, “Bride and Prejudice” is a critically acclaimed Bollywood remake of Jane Austen’s famous novel, “Pride and Prejudice.” It tells the story of Lalita Bakshi, her embarrassing mother, and her three sisters, Jaya, Maya, and Lakhi. When Lalita meets the handsome and wealthy Will Darcy at a wedding, the two first clash heads, but they later unexpectedly fall in love.
• “Aladin” (2009) – Inspired by Disney’s “Aladdin,” the Bollywood version of “Aladin” centers on an orphan named Aladin Chatterjee who has been teased his entire life because of his fairytale name. While in college, Aladin develops a crush on a foreign exchange student named Jasmine, but he doesn’t know how to approach her. Fortunately, he receives a magic lamp for his birthday and unleashes the genie inside named Genius. After wasting a few wishes, Aladin asks Genius to help him win Jasmine’s heart. Meanwhile, the Ringmaster does everything he can to acquire the magic lamp for his own evil plans. Despite its less-than-stellar reviews from critics, the film won International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards for best art direction and best female debut, and it was praised for its impressive special effects.
• “3 Idiots” (2009) – Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, “3 Idiots” broke all opening box office records with its 2009 Indian release. It also won sixteen IIFA awards. The film centers on three students, Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi, and “Rancho”, who shared a room at the Imperial College of Engineering. The passionate “Rancho” mysteriously disappears after his studies end, and the film is told through flashback as Farhan and Raju try to find him. It also features a love story and an intriguing plot twist.
